KODIAK, Alaska — Alaska Native-owned Koniag Inc. has acquired a Soldotna-based electrical services provider to add to its growing portfolio of companies in the energy and water sector.

The Kodiak-based Koniag purchased a majority stake in Big G Electric & Engineering to strengthen its electrical and oil field services capabilities, as well as tap into other growth opportunities in the Lower 48 states, according to a statement.

Big G Electric’s previous projects have spanned the Kenai Peninsula to Alaska’s North Slope region with a specialty in oilfield companies. Owner Bruce Gabriel will stay on with the company as president. He retains a 20-percent stake in the business, according to a report from KMXT.

“This partnership is a great fit,” Gabriel said in a statement. “Big G has always been a family company, and Koniag’s combination of strong community values and national reach presented a great opportunity for us to take the next step in our growth.”

Big G Electric has licensing to do business in North Dakota, Texas, Colorado and Wyoming. Gabriel told KMXT that the company looks to put Alaskans to work on those projects and keep talent and opportunities in the state.

Koniag’s energy and water portfolio includes Dowland-Bach, a control systems, process modules and stainless steel fabrication firm based in Anchorage that works on wellhead and flow line protection, as well as Glacier Services Inc., a process control and automation provider also based in Anchorage.

The addition of Big G Electric will “present opportunities to create economic synergies and bundle services,” according to Koniag.

“The Koniag Board and executive team are diligently focused on business growth, which leads to benefits and opportunities for our Shareholders,” Koniag CEO Ron Unger said in a statement. “This is another positive step in that direction.”

Koniag Inc. is an Alaska Native Regional Corporation created for the benefit of more than 3,400 Alutiiq people from Kodiak Island region.

The company’s diversified portfolio includes companies in the government contracting, commercial I.T. and energy and water sectors, as well as real estate holdings throughout the country. Koniag also operates the Kodiak Granite Quarry and the Kodiak Brown Bear Center, both on Kodiak Island.
