The Federal Highway Administration announced more than $40 million in available funding to help tribal governments improve roadways and address transportation safety issues through the Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund.
The updated notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) will accept applications from Oct. 1, 2025, to Jan. 15, 2026. All 574 federally recognized tribes are eligible to apply for the competitive grants.
The program aims to reduce serious roadway departures and fatal crashes in Native American and Alaska Native communities. Eligible projects include measures that keep drivers in lanes, enable safe recovery along roadsides and reduce accident severity. Priority goes to projects that incorporate safety features into existing infrastructure.
The funding represents the latest round of a competitive grant program established in 2012 under the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act and extended through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021.
Since its creation, the Federal Highway Administration has awarded approximately $141 million across multiple funding rounds for more than 1,000 projects on tribal lands.
The program addresses critical transportation safety challenges facing tribal communities, where road conditions and emergency response capabilities can create unique safety risks. Tribal transportation systems often serve remote areas with limited maintenance resources and infrastructure.
