The U.S. Department of Energy announced Eric Mahroum as the director of the Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs.

Mahroum previously served as director of DOE’s Office of State and Community Energy Programs, a position he assumed in January 2025, per a DOE press release. In that role, he oversaw programs that made available hundreds of millions of dollars to Indian tribes and Alaska Native corporations.

The new director first joined the department in 2017 during the Trump administration. He later served as director for the Department of Energy under the White House Faith and Opportunity Initiative in 2019 and held roles at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development before returning to Texas.

Mahroum first joined the department in 2017 during the first Trump administration, serving in roles including assistant to the secretary and special advisor in the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs. He served as senior advisor on minority business from 2018 to 2019, then as director for the Department of Energy under the White House Faith and Opportunity Initiative. He worked as an advisor to the regional administrator at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Fort Worth, Texas, before leading Mahroum Communications, LLC.

In his new role, Mahroum said his experience overseeing programs that distributed hundreds of millions of dollars to tribes and Alaska Native corporations, combined with his energy industry background, prepared him to help tribes expand energy development in line with the Trump administration's priorities.

He has served on advisory boards including the American Lebanese Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Advisory Committee for the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. He was appointed to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission in 2022 by Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Wayne Christian.
