Native-led grantmaker Native Voices Rising will receive $7.5 million through a partnership with Seattle-based philanthropy organizer Magic Cabinet, bolstering Native-centered philanthropic efforts across the country.
The partnership will provide NVR with $1.5 million annually for five years to invest in advancing tribal sovereignty, self determination and community development. NVR will guide the funding into other Native-led nonprofit organizations based on community needs.
“At the heart of Native Voices Rising is a commitment to self-determination where Native communities set their own priorities and funding decisions,” Shash Yázhí Moreno Charley, grants manager of Native Voices Rising said in a statement.
This marks NVR’s first major project since separating from its parent organizations, the Common Counsel Foundation and Native Americans in Philanthropy, last month. Since its founding in 2013, NVR has distributed more than $16.5 million to 250 Native-serving organizations and projects across the United States.
A key focus of the partnership will be addressing gaps created by recent federal funding cuts affecting tribal communities. The organizations aim to provide flexible funding that allows Native communities to direct resources where they’re most needed.
Magic Cabinet CEO Christina Engel emphasized that their approach centers on community voices and building partnerships that create lasting, systemic change. “There’s a growing accountability across the philanthropic sector for this type of community-led partnership … We hope this model inspires others to rethink how we, as funders, engage with and invest in communities, and specifically with Native communities.”
