Cherokee Federal, the federal contracting arm of Cherokee Nation Businesses, has expanded its presence in the Washington, D.C. area with the opening of a new office in Tysons Corner, Virginia. 

The new space, located in Greensboro Park, will accommodate more than 100 employees and is strategically positioned to be in close proximity to many of the tribal firm’s government clients. 

The new 20,000-square-foot office on Greensboro Drive is designed to foster collaboration and innovation, featuring modern amenities such as a wellness room and various meeting spaces, according to a statement. The company said the design of the office reflects Cherokee Federal’s commitment to providing a high-quality work environment for its employees while enhancing its ability to serve federal partners.

"As we continue on a solid trajectory, this strategic expansion in D.C. provides a centralized and sophisticated environment that reflects the quality of service we are known for providing to our federal partners," said Steven Bilby, president of Cherokee Federal. He added that the company is eager to grow its workforce and expand its service offerings in the nation’s capital.

The expansion follows a period of sustained growth for Cherokee Federal.  The tribally owned firm has earned nearly $2.9 billion in federal awards since 2021, including indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contracts for federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Internal Revenue Service, and multiple branches of the Department of Defense (DoD), according to data from market intelligence firm HigherGov

In March 2023, the company also acquired Criterion Systems, a cybersecurity and IT services firm based in Vienna, Virginia. Criterion, which serves over a dozen federal agencies, won more than $300 million in federal contract and subcontract awards over the past three-and-a-half years, according to HigherGov.  The acquisition added more than 450 IT professionals to Cherokee Federal, adding to the tribally owned firm’s capabilities in cybersecurity, cloud/data center management, IT infrastructure operations, and systems engineering. 

Cherokee Federal was ranked on Bloomberg Government’s BGOV200 list of top federal contractors BGOV200 list of top federal contractors for the third consecutive year in June 2023. This ranking, based on fiscal year 2022 data, highlights the company’s continued success in the federal contracting arena. Bilby credited this achievement to the company’s dedicated workforce and its focus on solving complex challenges for government partners.

Cherokee Federal's 8(a) capabilities span key areas such as mission solutions, information technology, intelligence, humanitarian solutions, health, engineering and manufacturing, and construction management. 

In total, Cherokee Federal operates over 35 tribally owned LLCs and employs more than 4,900 dedicated professionals. With over 50 years of federal and commercial experience, the company serves more than 170 customers globally. Cherokee Federal is committed to supporting the Cherokee Nation by funneling 37% of its profits each month into the tribe’s general fund, directly contributing to critical services such as schools, hospitals, roads, and other essential tribal programs.
