Four New Mexico pueblos received $1 million in housing grants to address affordable housing challenges in their communities through funding from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and Homewise.
Pueblo of Acoma Housing Authority, Santa Ana Pueblo, San Ildefonso Housing Authority and Pueblo of Zia Housing Services Department each received $250,000. The grants were announced during a check presentation Thursday in Albuquerque.
Each pueblo designed its own approach to deploying the funds based on specific community housing priorities. Santa Ana Pueblo will expand infrastructure for new home construction and rehabilitate aging housing stock. Pueblo of Acoma Housing Authority will provide rental assistance to tribal members in housing authority-managed units, allowing the pueblo to redirect other resources toward new housing development.
San Ildefonso Housing Authority will repair owner-occupied homes, while Pueblo of Zia Housing Services Department will fund consultant fees and predevelopment costs for a planned subdivision.
The grants came through the FHLB Dallas Native American Housing Opportunities Fund, which was created to address housing needs of federally recognized tribes and tribally designated housing entities. The program committed $2.7 million to support 11 housing organizations this year.
Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and director of community investment at FHLB Dallas, said grants may be used for down payment and closing cost assistance, rental support, home repairs, new construction and administrative expenses.
FHLB Dallas distributed the funding through its member Homewise, a New Mexico-based affordable housing organization.
